Minoxidil; Frequent Questions and Answers-1

Q 21.
How Many Drugs are Available for the Treatment of Hair Loss?

How many kinds of medicine can we use for the medical treatment of hair loss?

A 21.

There are two kinds of medicine that have medical evidence on the effect of hair regrowth. They are finasteride (or dutasteride) and minoxidil.

The mechanisms of action are different from each other. Finasteride is a type II 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor. Minoxidil is a potassium channel opener.

Synergistic effects on hair regrowth can be expected by the combined usage of them. This is the reason why these two drugs are used as the standard treatment of hair loss in the world.

There are many other kinds of folk remedies for the treatment of hair loss. Most of them have no medical evidence on the effect of hair thickening. The author doesn’t deny all of them. You can try some of them according to your preference, if you like.
