Is It Safe to Continue Minoxidil during Pregnancy?

Safety of topical minoxidil during pregnancy will be the concern for many women.

In general, it is better not to take any kinds of medicine during the first three months of pregnancy. Initial trimester of pregnancy is the period with possible teratogenicity, which means that a fetus is susceptible to malformation during this period.

It will be better to stop minoxidil during pregnancy in the author’s opinion. Hair growth medicine will not be necessary during pregnancy.

Scalp hair density increases during pregnancy because of the changes in the balance of endogenous hormones.
Percentage of anagen hair increases by 7-13 % during pregnancy. High estrogen levels during pregnancy is considered to prolong anagen phase of hair cycles.

For the same reason, hair density will increase in women taking birth control pills.
The same can also be said for women who are receiving hormone replacement therapy for a menopausal disorder.

Female hormone increases hair thickness.
Pregnant women, women taking birth control pills, and women who are receiving hormone replacement therapy will not need hair growth medicine.
