Is It Safe to Continue Oral Minoxidil?

Patients suffering from hair loss visit AGA clinics for treatment of hair loss. Some of them have already been taking a large dose of oral minoxidil such as 5-10 mg tablet every day for many years.

They are so afraid of losing hair thickness that they cannot usually stop taking a large dose of oral minoxidil.

The author doesn’t recommend a large dose of oral minoxidil. Oral minoxidil is basically not safe with possibility of many serious side effects.

Dose of oral minoxidil should be reduced gradually and steadily. However, hair shedding will increase and hair will become finer when patients try to reduce the dose of oral minoxidil.

They need strong will to stop oral minoxidil. Dose reduction of oral minoxidil is usually difficult for many patients.

According to the Hippocratic Oath, it is responsibility of doctors not to recommend high dose oral minoxidil to patients suffering from hair loss.

Doctors should always encourage the patients to try to reduce the dose of oral minoxidil.
